Types of careers in our industry _

Engineering Scholarship

Scanpower is pleased to announce the launch of our Engineering Scholarship Program, designed to support aspiring local engineers who are planning to pursue degrees or national diploma courses relevant to the electricity distribution industry.

This initiative offers the opportunity for students to receive financial assistance, gain practical workplace experience, and benefit from mentoring provided by industry professionals.

Successful applicants will be awarded a payment of $5,000 per year towards their tuition and subsistence costs throughout their study journey. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to work with Scanpower’s network management team during holiday periods.

Applications for the Engineering Scholarship Program are now open to students residing within the Scanpower network area who are currently enrolled or planning to enrol in a university degree or national diploma course relevant to the electricity distribution industry.

Trainee Line Mechanic

With the support from an experienced team, you will be working towards becoming a qualified Line Mechanic, obtaining a New Zealand certificate in Electricity Supply (Distribution) levels 2, 3 and 4 in order to gain EWRB registration.

At the end of your training, you’ll be competent in

  • the installation, maintenance and replacement of underground distribution assets and poles
  • operating ground and structure mounted electrical equipment associated with distribution electric lines up to 66kV.

The traineeship would be suited to someone that has had at least two year’s work experience and is now looking for a career path that will be full of opportunity. You will be working outdoors in all weather conditions in a physical environment where no two days are the same.

Line Mechanic

As a Line Mechanic, you will be responsible for completing all types of power line construction safely, efficiently, and to a high-quality standard of workmanship. You will work as part of a dynamic contracting team that operates throughout the North Island, with stay away work on occasion.

We are always on the look out for highly motivated individual’s who have exceptional problem-solving abilities. You will be reliable, honest and want to make the most of the many opportunities that Scanpower will provide for you to develop your career.

Skills and experience you will possess:

  • Hold NZ Certificate, Level 4 – Line Mechanic
  • EWRB registration and current practicing licence
  • HT licence
  • Working knowledge of the industry safety rules and regulations
  • Excellent electrical testing skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Glove and Barrier worker (not essential)

Arborist

As an Arborist, you will be responsible for maintaining vegetation along power lines and other utility infrastructure to ensure the safety and reliability of the electrical distribution system. You will work as part of a dynamic team that operates throughout the North Island, with stay away work on occasion.

We are always on the look out for highly motivated individual’s who have exceptional problem-solving abilities. You will be reliable, honest and want to make the most of the many opportunities that Treesmart will provide for you to develop your career.

Skills and experience you will possess:

  • Perform pruning, trimming and removal of trees and vegetation along power lines and other utility infrastructure using industry-standard techniques and equipment
  • Operate and maintain a range of specialized equipment, including chainsaws, chippers, and aerial lifts, in a safe and efficient manner
  • Working knowledge of the industry safety rules and regulations
  • Work closely with other team members and communicate effectively to ensure project timelines are met and work is completed to a high standard
  • Assist in maintaining and repairing equipment, as required

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Utility Arborist or equivalent
  • Proven ability to operate specialized equipment such as chainsaws, chippers, and aerial lifts safely and effectively
  • Certification in Arboriculture or similar qualification preferred
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and best practices relating to tree care and vegetation management
  • Physical fitness and ability to work at heights
  • Current class 2 driver’s license (or better)
